Solar Geoengineering Startup Stardust Solutions Secures $75m Investment

Israeli-American climate technology startup Stardust Solutions has secured $75m in total funding to develop hardware and materials aimed at reflecting sunlight away from Earth to reduce global temperatures.

The venture capital backing includes a $60m funding round led by climate tech firm Lowercarbon Capital, alongside investments from Exor—the Agnelli family holding company—Future Ventures, Future Positive, Lauder Partners, Kindred Capital, Attestor, and former Facebook executive Matt Cohler.

How Solar Geoengineering Works

Stardust is focusing on stratospheric aerosol injection, a form of solar radiation modification designed to mimic the atmospheric cooling observed after major volcanic eruptions. Rather than dispersing sulphur dioxide, the company is engineering proprietary reflective particles alongside aerial delivery and monitoring infrastructure.

Founded in March 2023 by former Israeli government nuclear physicists Yanai Yedvab and Amyad Spector alongside Eli Waxman, the Delaware-registered firm is headquartered near Tel Aviv. The company emphasized that its focus is strictly on research and engineering rather than immediate deployment, aiming to provide a practical tool should carbon mitigation efforts fail.

Risks and Environmental Concerns

The technology has drawn sharp criticism from environmental advocacy groups, including the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL). Opponents emphasize that solar geoengineering does not reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide and risks destabilizing global weather patterns.

Campaigners also point to the threat of "termination shock," where a sudden halt in aerosol injection after years of artificial cooling could trigger rapid, catastrophic temperature spikes. Despite these concerns, public research programs are expanding, including a £56.8m research initiative launched by the UK's Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA).
