Richard E Grant and Christine Baranski Lead Noël Coward's Hay Fever Revival in London
A new revival of Noël Coward’s classic 1925 comedy Hay Fever has opened at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre, bringing Richard E. Grant and Christine Baranski together as the heads of the delightfully self-absorbed Bliss family. Directed by Emily Burns, the production explores the social embarrassment that ensues when four eccentric family members unexpectedly invite separate weekend guests to their Berkshire country house.
Although Hay Fever is now recognized as one of Coward’s most frequently staged works, its original 1925 West End debut met with mixed reviews due to its minimal plot, while its initial Broadway run was a commercial failure. The play’s theatrical success relies heavily on comic timing and performance energy rather than narrative drive, depicting a family described as artificial to the point of lunacy.
Set against Frankie Bradshaw’s elaborate stage set featuring French windows and corniced ceilings, the production showcases Grant’s vigorous portrayal of narcissist novelist David Bliss. Grant brings a trademark energetic style to the role, striding down the grand staircase in robes and slippers to read his manuscripts to an unenthusiastic household.
Performances and Staging
Christine Baranski portrays retired stage diva Judith Bliss, drawing inspiration from American actor Laurette Taylor, who originally inspired Coward's character. Baranski performs the role using received pronunciation rather than her native accent, though the delivery occasionally constrains the character's comedic rhythm during early press previews.
Standout performances among the ensemble include Ophelia Lovibond as Sorel Bliss, who emerges as the most self-aware and charming member of the household. The cast also features Will Close as Simon, Nancy Carroll as the experienced Myra, and Charles Edwards maintaining diplomatic gallantry amid the chaotic weekend entertainments.
