Farage Defends Record £72m Crypto Donations Amid Parliamentary Inquiry
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has claimed the public were "quite impressed" after his party secured a record-breaking £72 million from two cryptocurrency magnates, brushing off mounting scrutiny surrounding the backing.
The Independent reportedly quoted Nigel Farage (Reform UK leader) as saying: “The fact that I managed to pull off a coup of that magnitude, I think people were quite impressed”.
The funding was split equally between businessmen Christopher Harborne and Ben Delo, serving as a vital equalizer to compete against established Westminster political parties.
Largest single political donation in British history of £72 million, surpassing the previous record of £10 million.
Standards inquiry and suspension risks
The intervention comes as the Reform leader revealed he was recently interviewed in the Palace of Westminster by parliamentary commissioner for standards Daniel Greenberg. The 30-minute inquiry examined whether a breach of parliamentary rules occurred after failing to formally register a separate £5 million gift received from Harborne in 2024. Farage strongly denies any wrongdoing, maintaining the funds were allocated exclusively for personal security expenses.
Should the commissioner rule against him, the MP could face a suspension from the House of Commons, potentially triggering a by-election in his Clacton constituency. Security concerns around the leader have intensified following confirmation that a 28-year-old suspect charged with murdering former party figure Ann Widdecombe was also allegedly involved in a terror plot targeting Farage.
Campaign strategy and polling headwinds
Addressing his party's recent slip in opinion polls, Farage conceded that Reform had entered a "trough" after losing its earlier lead over Labour and facing increased pressure from the Conservatives.
The Independent reportedly quoted Nigel Farage (Reform UK leader) as saying: “The narrative that Reform has peaked? No, it’s troughed. It’s a very different thing, it’s troughed”.
He attributed the decline to a drop in his national campaign trail visibility, months of damaging headlines over internal finances, and vote-splitting caused by Restore, a far-right party founded by former Reform MP Rupert Lowe. Farage declared that Reform's general election campaign is now underway following HQ reorganisations, with the war chest earmarked for campaign infrastructure and dedicated production facilities for online channel Reform TV.
- Reform UK received a historic £72 million donation split between Christopher Harborne and Ben Delo.
- Nigel Farage faces potential suspension if the parliamentary standards commissioner rules against him over an unregistered £5 million security gift.
- Party funds are being allocated toward professionalising field operations and building production facilities for Reform TV.
