Ben Shephard and Chris Kamara Target Great North Run for Prostate Cancer UK
Television presenter Ben Shephard is preparing to complete the Great North Run half-marathon, running alongside close friend and former football star Chris Kamara.
The race marks a major milestone in Kamara's recovery and confidence building following his diagnosis with apraxia, a neurological condition that alters movement, balance, and speech. The physical impact forced the former elite athlete to undergo the arduous process of relearning how to run.
The Mirror reportedly quoted Ben Shephard (Television presenter and co-runner) as saying: “The way I see it, Sunday is the next stage. He’s taking the fight to the apraxia, showing who’s boss.”.
Overcoming Physical and Identity Challenges
After playing over 800 professional football matches for clubs including Leeds United, Brentford, and Bradford City, Kamara transitioned into broadcasting before health issues forced him to step back. In addition to apraxia, he was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid after experiencing severe brain fog.
The Mirror reportedly quoted Ben Shephard (Television presenter and co-runner) as saying: “I hadn’t really fully appreciated it, but he’s had to teach himself how to run again”.
To support Kamara throughout the challenge, Shephard and Kamara's 37-year-old son Jack will run at his side across the half-marathon course.
Raising Awareness for Prostate Cancer
The pair are using the high-profile run to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK. The issue holds deep personal resonance for Shephard, whose father received brachytherapy treatment following an early diagnosis.
About 1 in 8 men in the UK will get prostate cancer in their lifetime, with risk increasing for men over 50, Black men, and those with a family history of the disease..
