Apple Enters Foldable Smartphone Market with Launch of iPhone Duo
Apple has launched the iPhone Duo, marking its first entry into the foldable smartphone market and setting up a direct commercial clash with Samsung's newly released Galaxy Z Fold 8 across primary Western markets. In a notable supply chain overlap, Samsung's display manufacturing division provides the flexible panels used in Apple's new device.
A standout distinction in Apple's design is the inclusion of an IP68 ingress protection rating, making the iPhone Duo fully dust-proof alongside Google's Pixel foldables. In contrast, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 features an IP48 rating, leaving internal hinge mechanisms susceptible to microscopic particles smaller than 1mm, including beach sand.
Techadvisor reportedly quoted Luke Baker (technology reviewer) as saying: “You have to be very careful with the Z Fold 8’s hinge”.
Feature Parity and Ecosystem Integration
Apple built magnetic Qi2 and MagSafe alignment directly into the chassis of the iPhone Duo, allowing seamless compatibility with magnetic wireless chargers, wallets, stands, and cooling attachments without requiring an external case. Samsung foldables continue to lack built-in magnets, requiring users to attach bulky protective cases to use magnetic accessories.
On the software front, the iPhone Duo incorporates StandBy mode, turning the outer screen into an adjustable smart display and clock when propped open at various hinge angles. Apple also debuted an AI photography feature called Smart Take, which automatically captures photos when all subjects in the frame are positioned and ready.
- The iPhone Duo marks Apple's entry into foldables with IP68 dustproofing and built-in MagSafe.
- Samsung supplies the display panels for Apple's foldable despite direct commercial rivalry.
