Celebrity Traitors Viewers Surprised by James Blunt's Military Career and Kosovo Stand-Off
Audiences watching BBC's Celebrity Traitors expressed widespread surprise after discovering musician James Blunt's extensive military background. Taking charge alongside media personality Ross Kemp during the show's opening challenge, the 52-year-old Faithful demonstrated tactical leadership developed long before his chart-topping music career.
Blunt joined the British Army in 1996, following in the footsteps of his father, Colonel Charles Blount. Sponsored by the military to study sociology at the University of Bristol, he subsequently trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and served six years as an officer in the Life Guards, a cavalry regiment of the Household Cavalry.
Defying Orders in Kosovo
During his service, Blunt rose to the rank of captain and deployed to Kosovo in 1999 as part of a NATO peacekeeping mission. His military tenure included a high-stakes standoff at Pristina International Airport, where NATO forces unexpectedly encountered Russian troops.
Dailyrecord reportedly quoted James Blunt (Former Life Guards captain and musician, speaking in a 2010 BBC Radio 5 Live interview) as saying: “I was given the direct command to overpower the 200 or so Russians who were there.”.
Recognizing that military engagement could trigger a broader international conflict, Blunt refused to carry out the order, risking a court-martial. During his deployment, he kept a guitar strapped to the exterior of his tank, writing his track No Bravery while serving in the region.
Transition to Music and Hospitality
Blunt left the armed forces in 2002 to pursue music full-time, rapidly achieving international commercial success.
Over 20 million records sold worldwide following a six-year military career with the Household Cavalry..
In addition to his recording career, Blunt has expanded into hospitality. He became a pub owner by purchasing The Fox & Pheasant in Chelsea in 2017, and later acquired The Carpenter's Arms in Hammersmith in July 2026.
