Tennessee Death Row Inmate Survives Botched Lethal Injection
A death row prisoner in Tennessee has survived what capital punishment experts are calling one of the worst botched executions in modern American history.
Christa Pike, convicted in 1996, was subjected to two full doses of pentobarbital at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. Media witnesses reported that Pike remained awake, moaned, complained of a severe burning sensation in her arm, and was still snoring more than 40 minutes after the second dose was administered.
Dailymail reportedly quoted Robin Maher (Executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center) as saying: “This event is the worst we've seen and unlike any other botched execution in the modern era.”.
Legal and Medical Fall-Out
Legal representatives for Pike had previously warned state courts that her pre-existing medical conditions and compromised veins would lead to severe complications during lethal injection. Following the failure, Pike was transferred to a nearby medical facility for emergency evaluation.
Medical experts retained by the defence indicated that the prolonged lack of sufficient oxygen during the aborted procedure could leave the inmate with permanent neurological damage.
