Pink Vows to Keep Speaking Out Following Backlash Over Macklemore Concert Repost
Singer-songwriter Pink has broken her silence in a comprehensive social media essay, addressing public criticism after she reposted commentary regarding rapper Macklemore’s on-stage statements during Ed Sheeran’s stadium tour in New Jersey.
The controversy began when Macklemore, whose real name is Ben Haggerty, performed as the opening act at Sheeran's concert. Wearing a keffiyeh, the rapper addressed the audience on Israel and Palestine, advocating for equal rights and thanking student activist groups who led university campus encampments.
Following the performance, Pink—real name Alecia Beth Moore-Hart—reposted text on her Instagram Story from advocacy organization StopAntisemitism without adding her own caption. The shared text criticized Macklemore's speech as political propaganda and argued that concertgoers were owed refunds for the ambush.
The repost sparked immediate reaction online, with critics making assumptions about Pink's political beliefs. The 47-year-old artist initially posted memes in response before writing a lengthy essay to clarify her perspective directly.
Pink addresses social media habits and personal identity
In her essay, Pink acknowledged that sharing third-party posts can lead to misunderstandings, admitting that social media often reduces complex topics to quick reactions.
Metro reportedly quoted Pink (Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter) as saying: “Last Sunday I reposted somebody else’s post about Macklemore’s set at Ed Sheeran’s show. It said things in words I didn’t write, and I wouldn’t have chosen all of them. Then the comments came, and I did what I do when I’m hurt, which is post snarky memes and act like I’m fine. That’s on me.”.
Pink emphasized her Jewish heritage while making clear that she does not speak on behalf of any government. She reiterated her previous stance that Palestinians deserve a future that honors their humanity and aspirations.
Macklemore's remarks and concert organizer pushback
During his New Jersey performance, Macklemore delivered a dedicated speech urging support for Gazans and students participating in protests across university campuses.
Metro reportedly quoted Macklemore (Rapper and opening act on Ed Sheeran's tour) as saying: “To all of my Jewish brothers and sisters: criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, being against genocide in no way is a criticism of you. My message is for peace; love for all”.
Following the show, the Israeli-American Council launched an online petition calling on headliner Ed Sheeran to remove Macklemore from the remaining dates of his tour.
